50th CHAPTER anniversary CAMPAIGN FOR THE

African Violet Scholarship at UD

Shaping students, one by one!

About the project

Five decades ago, 11 young women became charter members of the Mu Pi Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., the first black sorority at the University of Delaware. In an effort to influence the lives of future students, the ladies initiated through the Mu Pi Chapter made history in 2018 becoming the first black sorority to create and endow a scholarship, the African Violet Scholarship, at the University of Delaware.

The African Violet Scholarship was established to influence the lives of current students.  The African Violet Scholarship is awarded to full-time students with demonstrated commitment to scholarship, public service, and leadership.  Since 2020 we have provided over $14,000 in scholarships, and as the endowment continues to grow, so does our impact.  In recognizing 50 years, we are launching a 6-month campaign to continue to grow our endowment so this scholarship can continue to make a difference for students.

How your support can make a difference!

Your gift to the African Violet Scholarship ensures that promising scholars can succeed in their studies and transform their communities. Your gift to the African Violet Scholarship will make you a stakeholder in UD’s future, shaping its students, one by one.

For the 50th Anniversary, we have created supporter tiers, allowing us to recognize those ladies initiated through the Mu Pi Chapter during our 50th Anniversary Celebration:

Violet Level  - $500 or more

Pearl Level - $250 or more

Diamond Level - $100 or more

Gold Level - $50 or more

There is flexibility to submit one-lump-sum donation or multiple donations during the specified period.  All donations collected from March 15, 2025 through August 31, 2025 will be applied to your total in determining your supporter tier.

Leave a Lasting Impact with a Legacy Gift

At the University of Delaware, your legacy can make a profound difference in the lives of future generations. By including UD in your estate plans, you can support the causes you care about most, such as the African Violet Scholarship, and ensure that your values live on.

What is a Legacy Gift?

A Legacy Gift, also known as planned giving, is a commitment made today to provide future support to the University of Delaware. These gifts can take many forms, including bequests, trusts, and annuities, and can be tailored to fit your financial and philanthropic goals.
